Millions of people are making the switch from smoking cigarettes to electronic vaping devices. Sometimes considered e-cigarettes, these devices use electricity to produce a vapor you inhale instead of combustible smoke from typical cigarettes. There are a variety of options ranging from tiny vaping devices that look and feel like a cigarette to larger devices that can be filled with a desired e-liquid flavor.

How Vaping Works
Most e-cigarettes have a replaceable inhaler cartridge containing vegetable glycerin and/or polyethylene glycol as well as flavoring and nicotine. When a person inhales on the device, a sensor triggers a vaporizer to heat some of the liquid flavoring. As the liquid turns to a vapor, it is drawn into the user’s mouth and lungs. Vaping is Safer Than Smoking
In a study conducted by a number of institutions including the University College London, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published by the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers noted significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals in former smokers using e-cigarettes. During the study, breath, saliva, and urine samples were taken to assess the levels of nicotine and other toxic chemicals in the body. Compared to smokers, those using vaping devices had lower levels of:
- Tobacco Specific Nitrosamine (TSNA): A cancer causing chemical found in cigarette smoke formed when tobacco leaves are grown and processed.
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): gases emitted from certain solids and liquids (including cigarettes) that may have short and long term adverse health effects.
- NNAL: A product formed after TSNA enters the body known to cause cancer.
It is important to note those using a combination of cigarettes and vaporizing devices did not experience the lower levels of these toxins.
In addition, a 2013 study in the Journal of Tobacco Control concluded the harmful chemicals in e-cigarettes were 9 to 450 times lower than regular cigarette smoke.
Vaping Helps You Stay Away from Cigarettes
A study conducted by the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) published in the journal Addictive Behaviors determined e-cigarettes helped keep former smokers away from regular cigarettes. In the survey, 52% of smokers who quit in the last five years used e-cigarettes daily compared to 28% who never used e-cigarettes. The results led the authors to conclude daily e-cigarette or vaping was the biggest factor in preventing smoking relapse for these individuals.
