Food affects your health probably in more ways than anything else, and our eating habits should reflect our desire for better health, both physically and mentally. We all know the body changes over time because we see it changing, but what people forget is the food we eat should reflect this change.

1) Increase Your Daily Protein Intake

A high-protein diet will give you more energy to go about your business; but it will also reduce cholesterol levels significantly, making you more active and less grumpy. Also, proteins keep your muscle mass intact, meaning it should be in your diet every day and if not, then it won’t be easy to curb cravings. Some good sources of proteins include eggs, peanut butter, fish, and nuts.

 2)  Add B12-rich Foods to Your Plate

B-12 and some other nutrients become more difficult to absorb into the body once we reach past a certain age. Because of this, doctors recommend we eat more foods that contain B-12 Vitamins as a way to boost cell metabolism, nerve function, and the formation of red blood cells. These vitamins play an important role in our physiology, so aim to get at least 2.4 micrograms every day – that’s the dosage recommended by the NIH and other authorities.

  3) Choose Healthy Oils

Contrary to some belief, eating fatty foods like fish and avocado won’t make you gain weight; in fact, it might be instrumental in managing weight. Add more nuts and fatty seafood to your diet to get the full supply of omega-3s fatty acids. This will keep you healthy for a long time if you can manage to supply your body with all the healthy fats it needs. Omega-3s are effective at reducing inflammation, which will increase with age.

 4) Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Hydrate only with water or fruit juice, which contains mostly water, plus an array of vitamins. Without water, the body wouldn’t be able to maintain homeostasis; meaning you’re likely to age faster and experience all sorts of ailments without water. Give your body a good supply of water by carrying a bottle everywhere, eating with a glass of water on the side, and consuming food that is rich in water and minerals.

 5) Get a Good Night’s Sleep

During rest is when the body heals and cells are able to regenerate, producing other healthy cells. Without proper sleep, this process would be disturbed and entire body systems would start to misfire. Even with a good supply of vitamin C, the immune system wouldn’t function without giving the body time to rest. Many chronic diseases are linked to a lack of sleep – think hypertension, stress, anxiety, heart disease, weight gain, etc. Failure to get enough rest almost always leads to a drop in productivity, soreness, fatigue, and many other conditions.

There’s no escaping the difference that time brings, and you’re not likely to look the same in your 40 as you did in your 20s, however, there are things you can do to accommodate change, but also to facilitate healthy functioning of all bodily systems. If done correctly, this can go a long way in reducing pain, loss of memory, and other disorders caused by old age.
