What it takes to be a Part of the CrossFit Games

Training for any serious physical competition is a huge feat. From running a 5K in your town to trying to place in the Olympic trials, taking your body to the next level takes a ton of dedication, coaching, and discipline. In recent years, there’s been a new physical competition making headlines. The CrossFit games are being described as the sport of fitness. The goal is to find the fittest people on Earth though fitness tests that are grueling on the body and take a ton of training to perfect.

There are three stages of the games. The first stages is the Open, which consists of five-week, five-workout competitions held in the winter all around the world. Workouts are released on Thursday’s and athletes 14 years or older have until Monday to submit their scores online. Only those who do well in the first stage are able to qualify for the second stages. In order to begin you must be a part of a CrossFit gym, or another gym that offers CrossFit classes, like Brick CrossFit. The second stage is called regionals and consists of three-day competitions that are held in the early summer. Those who qualify then move on to the CrossFit Games. 40 men, 40 women, and 40 teams are given sports to the CrossFit games. 80 teenagers and 240 masters are also accepted to the competition. The games come to a surprise to all the contestants so that they’re not able to train for the specific events, this makes the entire thing more fair. Places like Brick CrossFit employ the coaches and have the proper equipment to help you make it as far as possible in the Games.

Athletes score points relative to their performance in each of the exercises they’re asked to do in the Games. The idea of being the fittest man or woman in the world may sound extremely appealing to you. Though it would be a tough journey, it’s not out of reach. You can join the CrossFit community and get cracking at the goal right now if you wanted to. CrossFit gyms can be found around the world, so there’s bound to be one near you.

You can even check out the leaderboards and current workouts online. You do need to film yourself performing the workout so that there are no cheaters in the final rounds. Here are examples of one of the workouts currently posted.

Women (ages 18-34):

Complete as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:

  • 8 toe-to-bars
  • 10 dumbbell hang clean and jerks (women use 35lb dumbbell)
  • 12-cal. Row

Men (ages 18-34)

Complete as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:

  • 8 toes-to-bars
  • 10 dumbbell hang cleans and jerks (men use 50lb dumbbells)
  • 14-cal. Row

Master’s Women (ages 60 plus)

Complete as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:

  • 8 toes-to-bars
  • 10 dumbbell hang clean and jerks (women use 20lb dumbbells)
  • 12-cal. Row

Master’s Men (ages 60 plus)

Complete as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:

  • 8 toes-to-bar
  • 10 dumbbell hang clean and jerks (men use 35lb dumbbells)
  • 14-cal. Row

The workouts are very similar for the different ages groups and genders, so it’s more about endurance than small bouts of power and strength. This balances the playing field and gives everyone a chance to hit the same benchmarks and advance in the CrossFit games.

The CrossFit games started in 2007 and will continue to grow as more people like you become attracted to the inclusive community of fitness.
