So! After you’ve decided which yoga class to try first, here’s everything you need to know before you show up. 

Arrive on time. If you’re a first-timer, arrive a few minutes early for class.

Tadasana  

  • Place your toes together and your heels slightly apart. 
  • Spread your toes and distribute your weight evenly across both feet. Engage your core and tuck your hips in slightly so that your tailbone points down toward the floor. Roll your shoulders back and down, relaxing them.
     

Utthita Ashwa/Crescent Lunge 

  • Start in a staggered stance, with your feet almost mat-length apart, by taking a big step forward with your left foot. 
  • Bend your front knee while keeping your back leg straight and your heel off the ground. Make an effort to bend your front leg to parallel your thigh to the floor. Square your back in front of you. 
  • Extend your arms on the side of your head & stretch up while pressing into the mat and feeling the stretch. 
  • Hold for five breaths before repeating on the opposite side.
     

Trikonasana 

  • Extend your front leg. Then, with your left hand, reach forward toward the ground. Tilt your torso forward and open it to the right. 
  • Rotate your arms to the 6 and 12 o’clock positions. Place your left hand on your shin or, if possible, the floor, and extend your top arm fingers toward the ceiling. 
  • Hold for 5–10 breaths before switching sides. 
  • “It’s more important to keep your spine long than it is to reach low to your leg or the floor.” “Add more stability to this pose by placing a block under your bottom hand.”

There is a famous 5-minute practice that stretches the neck and shoulders while maintaining a breath cycle. It is slow and gentle, and anyone aged seven and up can do it!

Don’t be afraid to rewind or pause an online class to get a better look at what your teacher is doing. If you’re practicing without an online course, cross-reference your postures with books and websites. If you want to see your progress, practice in front of a mirror or record photos and video footage on your phone camera.

Even if you regularly practice yoga and are familiar with the postures, the whole point of practicing is to turn off your mind, which can be challenging to do if you’re constantly mentally sequencing your flows.
